Opera Singing

At the Institute for Music Theater (IMT), qualified music theater artists are trained for today's performance world.

Nationwide, the IMT is one of the few training centers that offer undergraduate studies, with stage training from the start of the course, for aspiring music theater performers. Students receive outstanding vocal training from internationally renowned professors. The range of courses also includes subjects such as musical part studies, stagecraft instruction, acting training, improvisation, dance, speech training, stage fighting, audition techniques as well as musical theater history and aesthetics. Outstanding artistic personalities such as Kammersängerin Professor Julia Varady as well as regular master classes with internationally known artists also provide significant inspiration.

The profound training includes an eight-semester bachelor's degree, four-semester master's degree, and four-semester degree program for Opera Soloists. These study courses are supplemented by large music theater productions with orchestras, the children's opera productions Kids@Opera, experimental music theater, and regular evening workshops. Here students may present themselves in different stages of training under professional conditions, testing them onstage in front of an audience.

Participation in IMT music theater productions is an important part of training. The high quality of performances on the large opera stage at the Wolfgang Rihm Forum means that a variety of collaborations are possible, including with the Baden-Baden Festival Theater, the Schwetzingen Festival, the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, and Baden State Theater in Karlsruhe.

The International Opera Studio, implemented with the Baden State Theater, is reserved exclusively for IMT students. Above all, it offers advanced students additional opportunities to be involved in day-to-day work of a first-class theater. This enables them to establish contacts at an early stage, often making it possible for them to enter professional theater life before graduation.
