Composition

Those who study composition want to forge their own path and create their own music. Those who study composition seek dialogue with lecturers and fellow students, are open to criticism, are open-minded and curious, and take an interest in the music of others. Those who study composition want to explore their own ideas and develop their own imagination.

Working closely with the university’s instrumental students, the composition students present their current works each semester as part of the Zimmer205 concert series. Masterclasses and encounters with composers and instrumentalists, as well as artists from other disciplines, broaden their horizons and offer new perspectives. Collaborative projects and exchange programmes with universities both in Germany and abroad complement this programme. The composition class receives intensive support from the Institute for New Music.

The Zimmer205-Riemschneider-Scholarship, established in 2026, enables the targeted support of composition students through an annual scholarship.

Compositions by students in the composition class, as well as other activities of the Institute for New Music, are documented on the Zimmer205-YouTube-Channel.

You may not be able to learn how to compose, but you can do it! The Karlsruhe University of Music aims to be a place where this is possible in a spirit of freedom.
