Portrait von Laurenz Gemmer

Laurenz Gemmer focuses his artistic work on piano improvisation. From an early age, he has developed his own intuitive piano style that draws on a variety of musical genres. Gemmer's artistic path unfolds between new music, jazz, and classical music. He describes his intensive engagement with Carnatic music, his collaboration with Indian and African musicians, and club culture as inspirations for his career. The vintage Yamaha CP70 hybrid grand piano is currently the tool of his electroacoustic vision of combining piano music and electronics on the dance floor. Improvisation and interdisciplinarity, essential continuities in his artistic work, are reflected in the subject matter and methodology of his teaching.

Laurenz Gemmer was appointed professor of practical piano playing and piano improvisation at the Karlsruhe University of Music for the 2025 summer semester.
