Musicology
Science is a special form of curiosity, the professional search for answers to a multitude of fascinating questions arising from a curious preoccupation with phenomena of the past and present worlds. At the University of Music Karlsruhe, musicology means, among other things, to open approaches to historical understanding of music, whereby the word historically also includes music of the recent past and the wide field of popular music. However, questions and methods of systematic musicology, in particular music psychology and acoustics, and current developments in the digital edition of music also belong to the subject area of musicology at the University of Music Karlsruhe.
In 2005, a new branch developed from the Institute for Musicology at the University of Karlsruhe, today's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), which, since 2018, has been called the Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology. The unique connection in this format with the still young, rapidly developing subject of music informatics is part of the special identity of musicology studies at the University of Music Karlsruhe. In addition, there is proximity to artistic courses, resulting in a variety of possibilities for cooperation between theory and practical results. Cooperation with KIT and other Karlsruhe universities as well as research institutions such as the Max Reger Institute (MRI) expand this spectrum.
In the bachelor's degree program, musicology is offered in combination with music informatics as a major, minor, or combined subject with relative proportions. The main focus of the master's degree program in musicology is the interpretation and teaching of music.
