Recorder

At The University of Music Karlsruhe, the recorder is taught primarily as a contemporary wind instrument (see the entry for wind instruments). Diverse original repertoire for recorder dating back to the Middle Ages with associated artistry, instrumental technique, and historical accuracy, are the bases for an education aimed at revitalization.

Study focus is on chamber music repertoire and performance techniques of the 20th and 21st centuries, ideally with state-of-the-art flute brands such as Helder, Eagle, Tarasov and EWI wind controller. Students choose their preferred historical focus for teaching repertoire and instruments in the bachelor's degree program. In the master's degree program, the focus may be intensified.

Weekly consort lessons teach basics elements of flute consorts. In class, practical topics such as movement and posture, melody and solmization, and harmony on the flute are addressed. On designated annual days, blocks are built and minor repairs made in voicing or intonation. Regular accompaniment from harpsichord, gamba, and piano completes the study experience.

Close cooperation with recorder makers, composers, concert organizations, public performance events, regional and Staatliche Kunsthalle recitals, professional seminars, and educational exchanges with area music schools result in lively contemporary practice.
