Zimmer205-Riemschneider-Scholarship
of the Institute for New Music at the Karlsruhe University of Music
The Zimmer205-Riemschneider-Scholarship, established in 2026, enables targeted support for the composition class and composition students through an annual scholarship of € 6,000. The Riemschneider Foundation contributes € 3,600 towards this, whilst a private donor who wishes to remain anonymous contributes € 2,400.
Each year, a small panel selects a composition student whom it deems worthy of support. The panel comprises the following members:
– Ronald Klein-Knott, Chair of the Riemschneider Foundation
– Prof. Manuel Nawri, Director of the Ensemble for New Music
– Prof. Markus Hechtle, composition tutor and Director of the Institute for New Music
The scholarship is awarded during a concert at which a composition by the scholarship holder is performed. This does not necessarily have to be a world premiere.
The benefits of such a scholarship for composition students are enormous, because unlike instrumental or vocal students, who can use their skills to earn money to support themselves – whether through occasional performances, as temporary members of orchestras and ensembles, or through relevant teaching work – this is hardly possible for composition students, at least not through their composing itself.
