Activities
The Institute for New Music is dedicated to promoting new music through a wide range of activities, such as:
- Concerts at which music by composition students or other composers is performed by the Ensemble for New Music – comprising instrumental students from the university – including in the form of interdisciplinary and cross-institute projects.
- Masterclasses with guest composers, as well as artists from other disciplines.
- Workshops with instrumentalists who discuss the possibilities and pitfalls of their instruments, often in collaboration with the respective instrumental departments and specialist groups.
- Collaborations, try-outs and concerts with external ensembles, in which the composition students’ initial sketches and ideas are first rehearsed and discussed, before the finished compositions are finally premiered.
- Encounters and exchange programmes with students from other universities and countries.
- Collaborations with broadcasters in the form of joint seminars, to which editors are invited, or through radio programmes produced by the students themselves.
- Excursions to major concerts and festivals.
Many of the activities mentioned are documented on the composition class’s Zimmer205-YouTube-Channel.
From 2027, the Institute for New Music will also award the annual Zimmer205-Composition-Commission, which is linked to a masterclass given by the commissioned composers. Finally, the Zimmer205-Riemschneider-Scholarship, established in 2026, enables the targeted support of composition students through an annual scholarship.
