School Music Orchestra of the University of Music Karlsruhe

The SchulMusikOrchester (SMO) is a very special and probably unique ensemble in the university landscape. It was founded in 2012 by student teachers with a great passion for orchestral playing. To this day, it is a self-organised orchestra with a lot of heart and musical passion. Professional orchestral music of a high standard is created here in an open atmosphere.

Who plays?

The SMO is made up of current and former school music students from the Karlsruhe University of Music and Performing Arts, active music teachers, major subject students and dedicated musicians from other degree programmes and universities. A colourful mix - all united by the joy of making music together.

When do we rehearse?

Rehearsals take place during the lecture period on Tuesdays from 19:00 to 21:00. In addition, every semester there is an intensive rehearsal weekend including register and tutti rehearsals, good food and an even better atmosphere.

Concert highlights

The crowning finale of each semester is a major symphony concert in the Wolfgang Rihm Forum, a real musical highlight that regularly ensures a full house (tip: get your tickets early!).

A special project close to our hearts is our family concert, which is performed on the concert weekend in addition to the symphony concert. In collaboration with the Master's programme in Music Education, we are creating a concert format especially for children: an exciting story will guide you through the programme, accompanied by interactive hands-on activities, and afterwards children will be able to try out instruments. For the children: experience music up close!

The SMO can also be heard outside CampusOne: at guest concerts in the region.

Our programme

The SMO's repertoire is just as diverse as its members. The works are chosen by the members each semester. In recent years, the programme has included

Anton Bruckner 7th Symphony in E major

Peter Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony in E minor

Antonin Dvořák Cello Concerto in B minor op.104

George Gershwin An American in Paris

Edward Elgar Variations on an Original Theme 'Enigma'

And many more...
