Verdi’s "Messa da Requiem", conducted by Prof. Matthias Beckert and performed by the HfM choir and orchestra alongside student soloists at the Christuskirche, won over both the audience and the critics.
Claus-Dieter Hanauer, writing in Pamina magazine, praised the choir: “The approximately 80 singers – whose line-up is, of course, subject to regular change – are capable of an enormous range, from the whispered, almost stammered ‘Requiem aeternam dona eis’ at the beginning of the Introit to the ‘gravitational waves’ of the Dies irae, the complex eight-part double-choir fugue in the Sanctus, and finally the ‘Libera me’ fugue at the end of this magnificent work.”
Jens Wehn, who attended the concert on behalf of the Badische Neueste Nachrichten, also praised the choir, the orchestra, the “excellent soloists” and the “carefully crafted contrasts”. You can read his review here.
