We are delighted to welcome James Gaffigan, an important contemporary conductor, to our university. As chief conductor at the Komische Oper Berlin and music director at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Gaffigan is a sought-after orchestra leader.
On May 24 & 25, he will conduct our university orchestra - an extraordinary opportunity for the students to work with such a renowned conductor, learn from his expertise and make music together. The concert will begin with Brahms' Academic Festive Overture op. 80, which the composer wrote to thank the University of Breslau for awarding him an honorary doctorate in 1880.
This is followed by Wolfgang Rihm's third movement Nähe fern 3 from the symphony of the same name, which is a direct reference to Brahms' third symphony. Rihm's symphony was premiered by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under the direction of James Gaffigan at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL in 2012.
After the interval, Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D major, also entitled “Titan” - which Mahler himself only had printed for a few performances - will conclude the evening. (MDC)
