about this event
Some of Henry Purcell's semi-operas are set in exotic surroundings. "This is the case in The Indian Queen (1695; unfinished), for example, although the piece, which goes back to Dryden, deals with a political conflict in pre-Columbian Mexico and Peru. The Peruvian general Montezuma tries in vain to win the hand of the Inca daughter Orazia. He then joins the usurping Indian queen Zempoalla, who falls in love with him: the occasion for one of Purcell's most beautiful arias (I attempt from love's sickness to fly in vain - Vergeblichs suche ich der Liebesqual zu entfliehen). In the end, she commits suicide with her son, while Montezuma proves to be the rightful heir to the throne of Mexico and takes Orazia as his queen. Purcell's score ends with the highly impressive beginning of the fifth act, when Montezuma and Orazia are to be executed in the temple of the sun god (Inca)."
