If music is a language, then music theory is perhaps something like its ‘grammar’. However, theory is not merely an end in itself, but aims to enable us to speak the language freely in practice. Thus, various disciplines play a central role in music theory: composing in historical styles, arranging, and instrumental/vocal improvisation as artistic components on the one hand; and, on the other hand, the theoretical and scholarly examination of music, analytical reflection, and the understanding of musical elements across a wide range of eras.
At the Prima Evening of Music Theory, students will perform their compositions and improvisations, accompanied by short analytical talks. Both the main subject of music theory and contributions from the minor subjects will be featured in a cross-class evening organised by all music theory lecturers at the HfM Karlsruhe. Look forward to a diverse programme ranging from the Renaissance through the Baroque and Romantic periods to the modern era!
