Prof. Steffen Schmid

Steffen Schmid, born in the Southern Palatinate in 1988, began his studies in 2007 at the Saar College of Music under Prof. Ralf Rudolph and later transferred to Prof. Stefan Heimann and Stefan Ambrosius in Stuttgart, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree with distinction in 2013. Further studies with Prof. Andreas Hofmeir at the Mozarteum in Salzburg rounded off his training. After a year as an intern with the Stuttgart Opera Orchestra, Steffen was engaged as a tuba player with the Bavarian State Orchestra at the Munich State Opera for the 2011/12 season.

Temporary engagements have taken him to renowned orchestras such as the German State Philharmonic Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the hr Symphony Orchestra. He regularly performs as a guest with ‘German Brass’ and is a member of the ‘OperaBrass’ ensemble, the brass section of the Bavarian State Opera. Since 2017, he has been a member of the Festival Orchestra of the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth.

Steffen has performed solo concertos with the Kurpfalz Philharmonic Orchestra Heidelberg, the Rhineland-Palatinate State Youth Wind Orchestra, the Erzgebirge Philharmonic Orchestra Aue and with ATTACCA, the youth orchestra of the Bavarian State Orchestra.
In 2016, he was awarded a scholarship by the German Music Competition.

With his tuba trio ‘Trio 21meter60’, he was awarded the OPUS KLASSIK prize in 2022.

As a lecturer, Steffen has taught at the Orchesterzentrum NRW and at the Lieksa Brass Week in Finland, amongst other places. Having previously been a lecturer in tuba at the Leopold Mozart Centre in Augsburg, Steffen has held the same position at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts since 2019.

Steffen Schmid will take up the post of Professor of Tuba at our university from 1 April 2027.
