Big Band of the University of Music Karlsruhe
Groove. Power. Sound.
When jazz meets classical training, something special is created: the big band of the Karlsruhe University of Music unites students from all institutes who share a passion for jazz, Latin, funk, rock and modern big band literature.
With a rich brass sound, a well-rehearsed rhythm section and a wide variety of styles, the ensemble sets musical accents - not only on the stage of the university, but also beyond: at events, festivals and concerts in Karlsruhe and the region.
Since 2005, the big band has been under the direction of saxophonist and composer Peter Lehel, who develops new programmes with the students every semester. International jazz and classical music stars regularly appear on stage. Singers such as Sandie Wollasch and Marc Marshall are also frequent guests.
Who plays with us?
All interested students of the Hochschule für Musik are welcome to join the Big Band, provided of course that they play a typical Big Band instrument such as saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass or drums.
When do we rehearse?
Rehearsals take place during the lecture period on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 19:30. Concert highlights
Night of Jazz and Pop: Once a year in the Wolfgang-Rihm-Forum; in co-operation with the Kulturfonds Baden e. V. and with the awarding of the Kulturförderpreis.
Swinging Christmas: The atmospheric Advent concert at the Sandkorn Theatre in Karlsruhe with American Christmas classics in big band sound.
Cool Summer Jazz: Open-air concerts at special venues such as the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute or the Baden-Baden concert shell.
... and many more.
