Mentoring programme Balu und Du
The nationwide mentoring programme Balu und Du supports primary school children in extracurricular activities and contributes to greater equality of opportunity. In Karlsruhe, it is run by the KIT's Studium Generale. Forum Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft (FORUM) as an interdisciplinary service learning programme. Committed students (called ‘Balus’) volunteer for a year to mentor an individual child (called ‘Mogli’) and give them one to three hours of attention and care once a week. Together, they discover new activities and learning opportunities. In this way, students can help children develop their interests and strengths and grow positively in our society. A large number of scientific evaluations show the lasting effectiveness of the programme for all participants.
Students record their experiences in an online diary, receive training in an accompanying seminar at FORUM, and are supported through exchange and counselling. They benefit above all in terms of personal development and gaining social skills.
Participation is compulsory for two semesters and is certified by a certificate of voluntary work and a certificate of achievement. Teacher training students can alternatively receive a certificate for the social internship.
A new year group begins each summer semester, with information events and the application phase always taking place in January/February (see the FORUM website for current information on dates). Attendance at the information event does not constitute a commitment to participate in the programme.
Students from the University of Music are also very welcome!
