Vanessa Auer, a reporter on the morning show, wants to learn to play the hookline of a Grammy-nominated song on the saxophone in a week – without any prior knowledge of the instrument. SWR3 listeners chose Lady Gaga's Abracadabra. Saxophonist, bass clarinettist, composer and arranger Peter Lehel teaches saxophone, jazz theory, big band and ensemble at the Karlsruhe University of Music. He agreed to take part in this experiment and guided the reporter through her first attempts on the instrument – with a live link to the Morningshow on Tuesday, 27 January. Vanessa Auer said with a good dose of self-irony that she was ‘musically at the level of a paramecium’ but highly motivated, or as she put it, ‘hot as frying oil’. On Wednesday, after a few hours of practising without guidance, Vanessa Auer presented her progress live again. Both can be heard in ‘Das Beste aus der Morningshow’ (The Best of the Morning Show).
On Thursday, 29 January, Peter Lehel will teach the reporter once again, and on Friday she will perform the chorus from Abracadabra live. After five days of practice, the result can be heard on Friday, 30 January, between 8:30 and 9:50 a.m. on FM or on SWR3 web radio.
