about this event

“Prima la musica, poi le parole” – ever since the advent of musical theatre, there has been debate about the relationship between text and music. And nowhere is the role of the text more important than in the recitative, the music ‘between the arias’. Through ‘recitar cantando’ – singing speech – composers from every era of opera history have sought to endow their stage characters with emotional depth, psychological credibility and dramatic stature.
Together, BA and MA students of Opera Singing and those on the Music Theatre Direction course at the IMT (Institute for Music Theatre) explore the diverse possibilities of recitative singing and present, in a staged form, how Monteverdi, Rameau and Mozart, as well as Debussy, Britten and Schönberg, transform speech
into song (and song into speech!). (Ulrich Proschka)
