about this event
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Liebesliederwalzer (Love songs waltzes) for 4 voice parts and piano 4 hands op. 52
World premiere of 10 of the 18 Liebeslieder-Walzer op. 52 at the first museum concert of the winter season in Karlsruhe with Clara Schumann and Hofkapellmeister Hermann Levi, piano, and 4 soloists from the Karlsruhe Court Opera on 6 October 1869.
Wolfgang Rihm (1952-2024)
Mehrere kurze Walzer für Klavier zu vier Händen (Several short waltzes for piano four hands)
"I wrote these little waltzes with one of my two free left hands, usually between door and door or two meals
- or in between or during nothing at all. Often fasting too, yes. They are mostly meant as souvenirs. Or were handed out for the tasting of composing guests who had just arrived. Almost all of them were created in Rome in 1979, when I was a scholarship holder at the Villa Massimo. Some stragglers owe their existence to entirely similar ephemeral modes of creation and unworthy of mention. Whereby I each time a great desire to create with artistic understanding and and yet void. That's rare, isn't it!"
Wolfgang Rihm (1952-2024)
Brahmsliebewalzer for piano (1985)
Wolfgang Rihm wrote the short piano piece in 1985 after reading Richard Heuberger's "Memories of Johannes
Brahms", it bears the performance instructions: "Not fast, rather heavy, often dull, never cheerful, perhaps
sullen, sour, but serious".
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
„Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer“ for 4 voice parts and piano 4 hands op. 65 (1874/75)
The world premiere of the New Liebeslieder Waltzes op. 65 took place in a symphony concert at the Museum in Karlsruhe on 8 May 1875. Soloists from the Karlsruhe Court Opera sang, accompanied on the piano
by Johannes Brahms and court conductor Otto Dessoff.
