Part 2: The Past
How it was – and how it could have been
Duel or Duet by
Astrid Dröse & Thomas Seedorf
KIT Karlsruhe & HfM Karlsruhe
with live music, keynote speeches
and audience discussion

At the end of the 18th century, when the French Revolution and its consequences threatened to turn the world upside down, Friedrich Schiller pleaded for the autonomy of art: ‘For art is a daughter of freedom, and it wants to receive its precepts from the necessity of the spirit, not from the necessity of matter.’ Schiller found enthusiastic supporters, but also encountered indignant criticism. His idea was hotly debated – and still is today.
With Astrid Dröse from KIT and Thomas Seedorf from HfM Karlsruhe, Matthias Bruhn from Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, and students from HfM Karlsruhe.
