This competition for young musicians has been held every two years since 2005. The competition is organised by the Max Reger Institute Karlsruhe and the City of Karlsruhe, supported by the Karlsruhe University of Music. The composer Wolfgang Rihm was patron of the competition until his death in 2024.

The competition is open to registered students at European higher education institutions as well as to musicians who have completed their higher education studies below the age limit of 30 years, exceptions being calculated on the basis of the average age of the ensemble. Any number of ensembles from each invited university may register for the competition. Admitted are: Duos, trios and quartets in original instrumentation and arrangement (instrumental/vocal).

The competition programme of approx. 60 minutes (45 minutes for voice) must cover various epochs, including one or more works from the oeuvre of Max Reger (at least 20 minutes).
