Two short operas by Giacomo Puccini and Umberto Giordano with students from the Institute for Music Theatre at the Wolfgang Rihm Forum of the Karlsruhe University of Music
In their short operas Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) and Mese Mariano (Marian Month), Giacomo Puccini and Umberto Giordano - two of the leading opera composers at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century - use their usual emotional tonal language to create nuanced portraits of two young women who become unwantedly pregnant, abandoned by their husbands and thus become social outcasts. The works, set in a convent environment, can be experienced for the first time this autumn in four performances at the Wolfgang Rihm Forum. Under the direction of Institute Director Andrea Raabe and the musical direction of Alois Seidelmeier, students from the Institute for Music Theatre at the Karlsruhe University of Music will bring the touching fates of the two women and their struggle for self-determination and recognition to life on these evenings.
