Mateus Naamã began his piano studies at the age of 14 in Brazil. Currently, at the age of 19, he is completing his Bachelor's degree in piano at the UFRN School of Music in the class of Dr Cesetti. He now lives in Helsinki and studies at the prestigious Sibelius Academy under the direction of Juhani Lagerspetz.
He has participated in music festivals such as Campos do Jordão, where he received lessons from internationally renowned pianists and performed concerts with the festival orchestra, other students and teachers in the Sala São Paulo and the Claudio Santoro Auditorium. He also took part in the Ouro Preto Piano Festival, directed by pianist Cristian Budu, where he immersed himself in an intense musical environment.
He is currently also working on his repertoire with the pianist Max Barros, whom he met in São Paulo and from whom he received an invitation to join his project for young pianists. Through this project, he has the opportunity to work with international pianists and take part in concerts and masterclasses.
In 2022, Mateus won first place in the Mansueto Barbosa Competition. He was also nominated for the Eleazar de Carvalho Prize at the 2023 Campos Festival. Last year, he took first place in the Edna Bassetti Piano Competition and received awards for "Best Interpretation of a Classical Sonata" and "Best Interpretation of Edino Krieger".
Edna Bassetti Habith Piano Competition
This international piano competition has been held in Curitiba, Brazil, in memory of the pianist and piano teacher Edna Bassetti Habith since 2002. The 14th edition of this competition in 2024 was a very special one, as it was also part of the celebrations to mark 200 years of German immigration to Brazil. Roberto Domingos, Professor of Piano at the Karlsruhe University of Music, was also represented on the international jury. Candidate Mateus Naamã was invited to Karlsruhe for a prizewinners' concert following his outstanding performance, for which he won first prize as well as two other special prizes.
The competition took place as part of the celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of German immigration to Brazil.
