Brigitte Fassbaender was born in Berlin in 1939 and studied singing with her father Willy Domgraf-Fassbaender. Her debut at the Munich State Opera marked the beginning of the sensational career of the then 21-year-old, who has appeared at all the world's leading opera houses and sung all the major roles in her field. She was THE Octavian in Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier for two generations of audiences. More than 200 recordings bear witness to her importance as a singer, many of them in the field of song. In 1995 she ended her singing career and devoted all her energy to directing. She has performed more than fifty productions at home and abroad. As a singing teacher she teaches in master classes at home and abroad. Many of her students are now pursuing successful careers themselves. She is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, chairwoman of the Richard Strauss Society, honorary doctor of the University of Manchester and holds the title of Kammersängerin of the Bavarian and Vienna State Operas.
