BIOGRAPHY

Annesley Catherine Black studied composition with Brian Cherney in Montréal and with York Höller/Hans Ulrich Humpert in Cologne. From 2006 to 2008 she completed composition studies with Mathias Spahlinger at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. The composer's list of works includes various genres, concert formats and media. She collaborates with numerous renowned artists in the fields of film, theater, art, dance, free improvisation and rock music. Her works have been performed by ensembles including Musikfabrik, Ensemble Modern, ensemble recherche, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, ensemble mosaik, asamisimasa, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, and the hr Symphony Orchestra, and have been performed at festivals such as ULTIMA (Oslo), Donaueschinger Musiktage, Warsaw Autumn, Festival Eclat, Wittener Tage für Neue Musik, and Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik. Since 2010, her works have been published by Edition Juliane Klein. In 2013, she received a portrait CD in the "Edition zeitgenössische Musik" series of the German Music Council.
Her awards include the Busoni Förderpreis of the Akademie der Künste Berlin (2008), the Composition Prize of the state capital Stuttgart (2009), and a Förderpreis of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation (2019). In 2018, she was elected an associate member of the Canadian Music Centre and a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin.
Since the winter semester of 2022/2023, Annesley Catherine Black has been Professor of Electroacoustic Composition and Sound Art at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg.
