Alma Unseld (formerly Lied class Prof. Dr h. c. Mitsuko Shirai · Prof. Hartmut Höll) has been awarded the Fritz Wunderlich Prize Kusel at the Fritz Wunderlich Music Days 2024 (from 15-21 September 2024 in Kusel). Alma Unseld began her vocal training at the Cantus Juvenum singing school in Karlsruhe in 2014 and was also a preliminary student in the Lied class of Prof. Mitsuko Shirai and Prof. Hartmut Höll at the Karlsruhe University of Music for four years during her school years. In 2021, she made her debut at the Heidelberg Theatre as Flora Flora in "The Turn of the Screw" and in 2022 at the Nuremberg State Theatre as Yniold in "Pelléas et Mélisande" under the musical direction of Joana Mallwitz. She has been studying with Prof Snežana Stamenković in Mannheim since 2024 and was awarded a scholarship by the German Foundation for Musical Life.

Yuriko Watanabe (Lied class Prof. Dr h. c. Mitsuko Shirai · Prof. Hartmut Höll) was selected with 5 other pianists from over 80 applicants to take part in a "French Mélodie" course of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme in Aldeburgh. The programme was founded in 1972 by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears in Snape Malting, UK. Led by two of the finest interpreters of French repertoire, Véronique Gens and Susan Manoff, this six-day French Song & Mélodie course will offer young artists a deep dive into the French language repertory.

Eren Parmakerli (PreCollege) from the class of Prof. Sontraud Speidel was awarded the absolute 1st prize ex aequo in his age group at the piano solo competition of the International Piano Festival FIPMA in Málaga/Spain. He was also successful in the piano concerto category and was selected to perform as a soloist with the Málaga Symphony Orchestra under the direction of José Luis López Antón in the Teatro Manuel España Mijas at the festival's closing concert.

The pianist Rebeka Stojkoska (Hartmut Höll Lied class student) will teach piano for Lied interpretation at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg in the winter semester 2024/25 as part of the "Female-Artist-in-Residence" programme.

Around forty years ago, Hartmut Höll came to Savonlinna in eastern Finland for the first time at the invitation of maestro Ralf Gothóni. Since then, he has been there every summer, giving a masterclass in art song at the Savonlinna Academy of Music. He has now been honoured for his commitment with the medal of the city of Savonlinna.

Three PreCollege students were honoured with prizes for young talent at the Melk International Baroque Festival. Mai Johannsen (baroque oboe), who studies with Georg Siebert and in the PreCollege with Juri Valentin, Merle Riemann (baroque violoncello), who is taught by Reinhard Armleder and in the PreCollege by Dmitri Dichtiar, and Georg Schäfer (harpsichord) from the class of Sontraud Speidel. The prize includes a concert engagement for STUDIO XVI at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music in July 2025

Tenor Zhuohan Sun (Lied class Prof. Dr h. c. Mitsuko Shirai · Prof. Hartmut Höll) won first prize at this year's Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau. His piano partner was Gautier Michel, who also studied at the Karlsruhe University of Music.

The lied duo Gabriel Rollinson · Yuriko Watanabe (lied class Prof. Hartmut Höll · Prof. Dr h. c. Mitsuko Shirai) took part in the Mirjam Helin Competition Helsinki. The song prize (€ 5000) was awarded to Gabriel Rollinson. The jury (Soile Isokoski (chair), Luca Pisaroni, Keval Shah, Bo Skovhus, Randi Stene and Dawn Upshaw) expressly recognised how unique and outstanding they were as a song duo. Yuriko Watanabe received feedback from the judges on how special her piano sound and her partnership were.

Matteo Gobbini (Andrej Jussow class) received a sponsorship prize at this year's Dr Hermann Büttner Piano Competition, Tomonori Murakami (Prof Momo Kodama class) the second prize. JiHun Hong (class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) won first prize.

At the Munich Piano Competition 2024, Yu-Hsien Chen (Master, class of Prof. Sontraud Speidel) won 3rd prize.

At the 11th International Piano Competition "Città di san Donadi Piave" (Italy) Florian Kleinertz (Bachelor, class of Prof. Sontraud Speidel) won 1st prize in his age group. 

Julius Dehnen (PreCollege class Toomas Vana) won 1st prize in the national competition "Jugend musiziert" in the category piano and one string instrument, age group III.

Clara and Ida Wißmann (12 and 14 years old, PreCollege, class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) won 2nd prize at the national competition "Jugend musiziert" in the category piano 4-hands, age group III.

At the International Opera Awards 2023, the opera "Oryx and Crake" by Søren Nils Eichberg and librettist Hannah Dübgen was nominated in the category "World Premiere". It was directed by Daniela Kerck, alumna of the MusicTheaterDirecting program. The world premiere of the play based on the successful novel by Margaret Atwood took place at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden in the 2022/2023 season. The International Opera Awards are among the most prestigious prizes for musical theater worldwide. Other nominees in the "World Premiere" category include productions by the Metropolitan Opera and the Festival d'Aix en Provence. The awards ceremony will take place on November 9, 2023, at the Teatr Wielki of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw. [SM]

At the International August Everding Competition in Munich, Erasmus student Robin Paillet (trumpet, class of Prof. Reinhold Friedrich) from Paris won the 1st prize endowed with € 7,000. At the same competition, Tobias Krieger (trumpet, class of Prof. Reinhold Friedrich) won the second prize of € 4,000 and the audience prize of € 5,000. At the International Trumpet Competition in Bad Säckingen, Johannes Troiber, also a student of Prof. Reinhold Friedrich, won 1st prize.

Thibault Keith (bachelor percussion) has received an internship with the Saxon Wind Philharmonic Orchestra in Leipzig. Sanae Suga (master percussion) became an academist at the Staatskapelle Halle (Saale). Michihiro Yoshida (master percussion) won a temporary contract for solo timpani and percussion at the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim. Luc Rockweiler (master percussion) won the position of Principal Timpani at the Barcelona Symphonic Orchestra. Nico Wolbert (graduate of the percussion class in July 2023) received a temporary contract for percussion in the SWR Symphony Orchestra.

Katharina Bierweiler (class of Prof. Christiane Libor · Prof. Stephan Klemm) has won two special prizes in addition to her main prize at the national competition "Jugend musiziert": a scholarship for the Rheinsberg Federal Music Academy for Young Music Theater; which will enable her to obtain a role in the 2024 opera production, and the CYMC special prize, which will enable her to go on a concert tour to China this year.

Soprano Isabel Weller, a Master's student in the class of Prof. Christian Elsner, was awarded 3rd prize and a special prize for the best opera aria at the International Haydn Competition in Rohrau, Austria.

At this year's Dr. Hermann Büttner Piano Competition, which was announced for piano and violin, Jooahn Lee, violin, with Eunhye Jung, piano, and Jie Wan, violin, with Yue Zou, piano, each received a sponsorship prize. The second prize of 5,000 euros was awarded to Yung-Ning Chang, violin, with Zhongzhi Sun, piano. The first prize of 10,000 euros was won by the duo with Adrian Kratzert, violin, and WooRim Lee, piano. The winners of the first and second prizes will perform works by Johannes Brahms and César Franck at the Wolfgang Rihm Forum of the Karlsruhe University of Music as part of the prizewinner and anniversary concert on June 28.

Leonie Fischer (age group V, ensemble woodwind and brass, class of Prof. Will Sanders), Marie Helling (age group V, ensemble string instruments, class of Prof. Laurent Albrecht Breuninger), Alma Unseld (age group V, solo voice, class of Prof. Dr. h. c. Die Sopranistin Yukari Fukui (Klasse Prof. Hanno Müller-Brachmann) hat neben ihrem Preis beim internationalen Mozartwettbewerb in Salzburg im März auch beim International Music Competition in Wien die Silver Medal errungen.

Claudia Pereira (20, Mezzosopran, Klasse Prof. Hanno Müller-Brachmann) hat beim Concurso National cidade de Gaia Anfang April den 1. Preis gewonnen. Beim Gesangswettbewerb “Bella Voce” des Kulturfonds Baden e. V. am 15. April erhielt sie einen Nachwuchspreis.

Die Mezzosopranistin Jasmin Etminan (Klasse Prof. Christiane Libor) errang beim Wettbewerb “Bella Voce” den dritten Preis. Beim gleichen Wettbewerb erhielten Maine Takeda (Sopran) den zweiten Preis und Yukari Fukui (Sopran) den Grand Prix. Beide studieren in der Klasse von Prof. Hanno Müller-Brachmann. Die Pianistin Yuan Ma (Liedklasse Klavier Heike-Dorothee Allardt) erhielt den Preis für die beste Klavierbegleitung.

Yejin Ahn (soloist exam piano, class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) and Eunhye Jung (soloist exam piano, chamber music class of Prof. Momo Kodama) each won 2nd prize in the Category Professional at the London Classical Music Competition in February 2023. Both also received 1st prize in the A1 category at the International Mozart Competition in Vienna, where they also won 2nd prize in the Piano for Four Hands category.

Tenor Cheng Li, a student of the Lied class of Prof. Dr. h.c. Mitsuko Shirai and Prof. Hartmut Höll, has been engaged by the Munich Chamber Opera as Belmonte in Mozart's "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" . Premiere is August 24, 2023, and performances run through May 2024. He has also been engaged by Oper Frankfurt / Bernd Loebe for 2024. Parts and dates are still being clarified.

Jihun Hong (Soloist Exam Piano, class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) won 1st prize in the Professional Category at the Euterpe Music Awards Competition, France Music Competition 4 Edition and Birmingham International Music Competition respectively.

Yejin Ahn (Soloist Exam Piano, class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) already won 1st prize at the Lugano International Music Competition Lugano (Switzerland) in October 2022.

Yejin Ahn (soloist exam piano, class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) and Eunhye Jung (soloist exam piano, chamber music class of Prof. Momo Kodama) won 1st prize in the Duo category at the Golden Classical Music Awards in New York. This prize includes participation in a concert at Carnegie Hall.

Jooahn Lee has the opportunity to complete an internship with the 1st violins at Saarländischer Rundfunk Saarbrücken.
Sayaka Tietz is doing an internship with the Aachen Symphony Orchestra.

Yungi Kaneko benefited from the loan of a violin from the Landessammlung Streichinstrumente Baden-Württemberg.

Yuriko Watanabe has been selected as the pianist for Thomas Hampson's support program at the Heidelberg Spring Festival. 
Tenor Zhuohan Sun and Yuriko Watanabe, piano, have been selected for the SongStudio at New York's Carnegie Hall and will work with Renée Fleming and others for a week in January 2023 and perform in New York.

Both study in the chamber music class of Prof. Roberto Domingos. Also in the category "Special instrumentations: Early Music" Georg Schäfer won a 1st prize.

At this year's Dr. Hermann Büttner Piano Competition for solo piano, Soojung Daria Kim and Matteo Weber (both class of Prof. Sontraud Speidel) as well as JiHun Hong and Robert Toshiki Esau (both in the class of Prof. Roberto Domingos) received four "uniform prizes" and prize money of EUR 2,500 each. The class of Prof. Roberto Domingos also received two promotional prizes of 1,000 EUR each to Mingjie Guo and Yesol Suh.

(for vocal ensembles), Hyunjin Lim (soprano), Jasmin Désirée Schaff (mezzo-soprano) and David Gatchel (piano) were awarded third prize (€ 1,200). Franziska Fait (soprano), Cláudia Pereira (mezzo-soprano) and Zihao Lin (piano) were awarded the second prize (€2,000), and Maine Takeda (soprano), Marie Gerhardine Iguchi (mezzo-soprano) and Pedro Vidinha Pandeirada (piano) received the first prize of €3,200. Four quartets won the Dr. Hermann Büttner Piano Competition 2021 (Piano Quartet): Two promotional prizes of €2,000 each went to the quartet with Katharina Kreutz (piano), Alexander Kozarov (violin), Silja Hofmann (viola) and Meri Yamashita (cello), to Yejin Ahn (piano), Jina Kim (violin), Jihye Lee (viola) and Ahram Woo (cello). The jury awarded two second prizes to WooRim Lee (piano), Natsumi Nakamura (violin), Jihye Lee (viola) and Yumin Lee (cello), and to Hyunhee Hwang (piano), Leo Esselson (violin), Hansol Lee (viola) and Gwangkyun Moon (cello). Both quartets can look forward to prize money of €6,000 each. No first prize was awarded. The jury of the competition, chaired by Dr. Hermann Büttner, included the pianist of the Fauré Quartet, Dirk Mommertz, as well as Christoph Schickedanz, professor of violin at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, and Dr. h.c. Hans Hachmann, former SWR2 chamber music editor.

In the competition for the Rainer Koch Memorial Prize of the Kulturfonds Baden e. V. for the best interpretation of a work by Wolfgang Rihm, the duo Jina Kim (violin) and Hyunhee Hwang (piano) – for "Hekton" – and the Trio Atria with Nina Muñoz Ramos (piano), Lucía Fernández (violin) and Álvaro Berlanga (cello) – for "Fremde Szene III" – each received a second prize (€ 1,500). The first prize (€2,000) was awarded to soprano Maine Takeda and pianist Uram Kim, who interpreted two songs from "Das Rot." The jury, chaired by Wolfgang Rihm, included Sontraud Speidel, Markus Hechtle and Mathias Tritsch, the president of the Kulturfonds Baden e. V.. Wolfgang Rihm said he was "very moved by the quality of all those who tackled the musical text".

At the International Piano Competition CLAVIS with Presence Final in Füssen/Allgäu, Amy Reiss (class of Prof. Sontraud Speidel) won the 2nd prize of age group D (18 to 30 years) and also received a diploma for the best interpretation of a romantic work, a diploma for the best interpretation of a 20th/21st century work with an invitation to perform at the concert "Petersburg Composers Prize" at the International Music Festival "Earth of Children" in Saint Petersburg/Russia and the special prize from Zimmerli Sounds for a professional demo piano recording.

This semester she is completing her BA in music theatre directing, and in the autumn she will take up a permanent position at the Staatstheater Kassel: Marlene Pawlak will not only work there as a director and music theatre educator, but will ultimately take on the position of a mediator of music theatre. She is responsible for numerous interdisciplinary and intergenerational projects in which she contributes her expertise as a director. Marlene Pawlak is thus part of the core team of the new artistic director Florian Lutz. As her BA thesis, she had staged "Il segreto di Susanna" by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari on the grounds of the Alter Schlachthof in Karlsruhe in May 2021. Her next production has been announced for August 2021, which she will stage together with Fabian Grimm (MA degree in music theatre directing in the summer semester 2021) and the Junge Kollektiv Musiktheater e.V.: Mozart's "Requiem" at the Frauenalb Monastery Ruins. Dates: 5, 6, 9 and 10 August 2021.

In view of the Corona pandemic, prizes were awarded for the first time this year in a purely digital competition at the International Robert Schumann Competition Zwickau. Of the 41 young pianists and singers in the final, the juries selected a total of 11 prize winners via video conference and awarded a special prize for song accompaniment, as the city announced. In the fall, the winners will have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience in Zwickau. A total of 147 musicians from 33 countries took part.
The Korean soprano Hyunseong Kang and the tenor Zhuohan Sun, who comes from Shanghai, as well as the Korean mezzo-soprano Soyeon Lee were named as prize winners of the Robert Schumann Competition 2021. All three singers study in the Lied class of Prof. Dr. h. c. Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll.
Hyunseong Kang was already First Prize Winner of the International Competition for 20th and 21st Century Song in 2019 in duo with pianist Uram Kim.
In 2020, the Liedduo Konstantin Ingenpaß · Hyun-wha Park had been awarded the First Prize at the International Hugo Wolf Competition.

Maria Kalmbach – alumna of the Karlsruhe University of Music – has just received an engagement as an alto in the renowned Calmus Ensemble. The five-member a cappella ensemble is of great international importance and has already been awarded an ECHO and an OPUS prize.

Already since October 2020, Marvin Stutz – alumnus of the Karlsruhe University of Music in the field of school music, majoring in percussion (class of Prof. Isao Nakamura) and performance major in orchestral conducting (class of Prof. Dieter Kurz) – has been working as deputy musical director and percussionist in the Baden-Württemberg State Police Orchestra.
