Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup: Appreciation as encouragement for an artistic path

Every year, the city awards the Karlsruhe University Prize to students who draw attention to themselves through special talent and outstanding achievements. This year the award goes to the violinist Yoerae Kim. The award ceremony with Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup should have taken place during the Academic Year Celebration at the Hochschule für Musik, but had to be cancelled due to the current regulations for the containment of the corona virus.

"I am delighted to congratulate Ms. Yoerae Kim on her masterful artistic skills," says Mentrup. Especially in these times, "the appreciation of young, talented cultural workers, the encouragement but also the encouragement to continue to pursue one's own artistic path with so much dedication and performance is of great importance." And this not only "in the sense of a gesture, but expressly also as a signal from the city of Karlsruhe", Mentrup continued.

Yoerae Kim, who lives in Karlsruhe, received her first violin lessons at the age of four and was a young student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest from 1999 to 2007, studying with András Kiss and Miklos Szenthelyi. From 2007 to 2012 she completed her diploma studies with Roman Nodel at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim. During this time Kim attended numerous master classes, including with Zakhar Bron, Ulf Hoelscher, Rainer Kussmaul, Shmuel Ashkenasi and Latica Honda-Rosenberg. In 2012 she was a scholarship holder in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Munich. She was then offered a temporary contract for a position in the first violins. In the 2017/2018 season, she was engaged as First Concertmaster in the Kassel State Orchestra as a substitute for her maternity leave. Since 2018 Yoerae Kim has been preparing for the soloist exam in the class of Professor Christian Ostertag at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. For her impressive interpretation of a work by Wolfgang Rihm, she was awarded first prize in the 2019 competition for the Rainer Koch Memorial Prize of the Kulturfonds Baden.
