A total of more than 30 researchers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland met from 24-25 March 2020 at the Karlsruhe University of Music and hybrid in virtual space at the invitation of Prof. Dr Elisabeth Theioshn (Karlsruhe University of Music) and Annika Endres (Freiburg University of Music). The research interest group Design-Based-Research in Music Education, which was founded ten years ago, meets annually at different locations and discusses methodological, methodological, theoretical and fundamental practical research questions relating to the developing research formats. This year, for the first time, the working meeting offered a profitable combination of music education topics and questions about development processes in game design. In the keynote speech, Prof. Dr Sabiha Ghellal (hdm Stuttgart) spoke about development-oriented research approaches in the gaming sciences and emphasised the ethical aspects of a holistic research culture. The potentials and conditions for success of transdisciplinary research impressively presented by Celina Ciemer (hdm Stuttgart) opened up important perspectives for upcoming developments for all participants, especially for the Karlsruhe University of Music.
In addition, insights were provided into current research projects at the Freiburg and Vienna locations, and urgent questions were discussed on how the connection between research and practice can be constantly rethought in new and different ways. Enriched by the exchange and the inspiring atmosphere at Gottesaue Castle, the conference concluded with a look ahead to next year's conference at the UDK Berlin at the invitation of Prof. Dr Ute Konrad.
