In the spring of 1827, Franz Schubert announced the first 12 songs of Winterreise to his friends as a ‘cycle of gruesome songs’. His friends were quite taken aback by the sombre mood of these songs. But Schubert confessed: ‘I like these songs more than any others, and you will like them too’.
