
Biography
Univ.-Prof. Dr. h.c. Johannes Meissl is Professor of Chamber Music and, since October 2019, Vice Rector for International Affairs and Art at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw).
Prior to this, he headed the Joseph Haydn Institute for Chamber Music, Early Music, and New Music from 2010 and was Chairman of the mdw Senate from 2015 to September 2019. He is Artistic Director of the mdw's International Summer Academy (isa).
Johannes Meissl studied at the mdw with Wolfgang Schneiderhan, Gerhart Hetzel, and Hatto Beyerle. Since 1982, he has been a member of the Artis Quartet Vienna, with which he regularly performs internationally in famous concert halls and at major festivals. Numerous awards (Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d'Or, German Record Prize, etc.) for around 40 recordings and a successful concert cycle at the Vienna Musikverein since 1988 attest to the ensemble's standing. Johannes Meissl also performs as a soloist and in a wide variety of chamber music projects.
Together with Hatto Beyerle, he directs the ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy) and teaches at numerous courses and summer academies worldwide. Meissl currently also holds a visiting professorship at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In recent years, Johannes Meissl has also successfully devoted himself to conducting and performs regularly with various orchestras in Austria, Japan, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, and Romania.
