Cellist and gambist Christophe Coin began his musical training in his home town of Caen with Jacques Ripoche and then studied at the Paris Conservatoire with André Navarra. At the age of 16, he received a scholarship to study in Vienna. He first came into contact with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, to whom he owes important impulses for his exploration of early music. From 1978/79, he studied viola da gamba at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Jordi Savall.

Since 1978, Christophe Coin has played regularly with well-known early music ensembles such as the Concentus Musicus Wien, the Hespèrion XXI and the Academy of Ancient Music.

He has also performed as a soloist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Il Giardino Armonico, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

His commitment to early music led to the founding of the Ensemble Mosaïques in 1984, from which the Quatuor Mosaïques emerged in 1985, with Erich Höbarth, Andrea Bischof and Anita Mitterer as three further members of the Concentus Musicus Wien. Christophe Coin has led the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges since 1991, with which he explores the European repertoire from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Christophe Coin is also interested in research in the field of instrumentology and the playing techniques of old instruments, the results of which he incorporates into his practical work. He has been teaching cello at the Schola Cantorum since 1988 and leads a class for cello and viola da gamba at the Paris Conservatoire.
